It’s a chair with nearly no straight forms, it’s a very Gaudí chair in this aspect.

During the 1930s in Paris, Salvador Dalí surrounded himself with a circle of friends involved in the application of art to varied disciplines, above and beyond the study of pure pictorial art. Jean-Michel Frank, a furniture maker and decorator of recognized prestige in the Paris of those years, was on very good terms with Dalí and together they worked on several ideas. The Bracelli lamp which we present here is a classic design after Jean-Michel’s manner of designing and working, adopted by Dalí for his house at Portlligat. Amongst Dalí’s specific furnishing projects, and constituting another for his curriculum vitae as a designer, may be counted the garden furnishings for his Portlligat house, the complete architecture of the Night Club (garotte-shaped) for the Hotel Presidente in Acapulco (1957) and another project for a bar in California in the 1940s. As shown by the small selection now produced and included in this catalogue, Dalí’s work was not restrictes to the traditional furnishing elements, but included tap fittings, handles, door-pulls, printed fabrics and objets of indeterminate use. In the 1990s a group of experts, led by Oscar Tusquets, set themselves the task of turning the furniture Dalí had drawn for Jean-Michel Frank into reality. Amongst these items were the Leda chair and low table, taken from the painting “Femme à latête rose” (1935). The prototypes were made by the sculptor Joaquim Camps and BD organised its production and exclusive world marketing.

In 2009 we commemorated the 20th Anniversary of the death of Salvador Dalí and BD wished to add its special homage by producing a special limited edition of his fantastic furniture collection. All the finishing’s are based on black, with aged black patina on the casted brass, Black Marquina marble for the famous egg, darkened gold leaf and dyed lime wood satin in black for the upholstery and lingerie chiffon, also black for the lamp shades. Refined materials and handcrafted manufacturing to bring up to date a furniture collection that BD has sold exclusively all over the world since the 90s, guaranteed by The Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation responsible for the painter’s rights. The furniture was really very much in Dali style, but difficult to combine in not absolutely surrealistic interiors. When we made a Leda chair with aged black patina for a special set-up and observed the enthusiastic reaction of the professionals, we were convinced that these crazy objects would look much less controversial in a decor if they were dyed black.

Sculpture-Bracelli lamp

A standing lamp which corresponds to the work of Jean Michel Frank, adopted by Dalí for his house at Port Lligat. The zig-zag pyramidal pedestal is covered in gold leaf due to it’s being a noble metal and one of Dalí’s obsessions. The Muleta also is an addition to his obsessions.

Sculpture-lamp Crutches

A standing lamp taken from Dalí’s designs for Jean Michel Frank. The ‘Muletas’ had its beginnings at the surreal stage and is an obsession which persists in Dalí’s works as can be seen in “El Sueño” 1937 (The Dream) and “Autorretrato blando con beicon frito” 1941 (A soft self – portrait with fried bacon), amongst others.

Sculpture-lamp drawers

A standing lamp taken from Dalí’s drawings for Jean Michel Frank. With this, Dalí introduced the little drawers at the base of the lamp, an idea he already used on other occasions for example, ‘Venus de Milo aux tiroirs’ (Venus of Milo with drawers). The idea of connecting the electronic cord through one of the drawers is a contribution made by Architect Oscar Tusquets Blanca.

This project is a hallmark on the long tradition of BD’s reproductions of Salvador Dali’s furniture, that started with the Sofa in the form of lips, which was installed in the Sala Mae West of the Theatre Museum in the city of Figueres. Later in time, BD reproduced other furniture and lamps. Ideas were drawn from Dalí’s own drawing projects and paintings. This is the same with the Xai.
We broke up the painting, “Interpretation Project for a stable-library” (1942), where there appears a characteristic Dalí drawer, made up of a little lamp-table. BD has received the support of the exceptional expertise and capacity of Deyrolle, the taxidermist from Paris who maintained an intense relationship with Salvador Dalí (many of Dalí’s pieces —bears, lions, lobster, swans…— are made by Deyrolle).
Apart from the exceptional work of the taxidermist, emphasis must be placed on the maker of little table’s drawer and the little shoes in bronze. Oscar Tusquets

With the approval of the Gala Salvador Dalí Foundation, BD has decided to launch a limited edition of twenty white lambs, and one unique version in black. Naturally, as each piece is unique, each little table is in reality an only piece.

Deyrolle certifies that the sheep skins used for the prduction of these pieces come from a slaughter house which is a meat supplier, and no animal sacrifice has been made.

The “Invisible Personage” armchair now continues BD’s long tradition that began back in 1991 with the Leda table and chair, that of producing furniture painted by Salvador Dalí. When reviewing the Master’s work, we discovered furniture in his paintings which after receiving approval by the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation, we decided to produce with Oscar Tusquets’ assessment, life-member of the Foundation and personal friend of Dalí.

“Invisible Personage” is extracted from the “Singularities” painting, painted by Salvador Dali in 1935. During those years Dalí completed a series with absent figures, which he called invisible personages.

This product is a limited edition of 20 units.

All pieces of ironwork in this collection are made of brass. The Black Label Leda Collection has an artisanal application of a special patina (metal dissolved in nitric acid) which is applied to a lightly heated surface accomplished with a gas blow torch.
