Located on the castle grounds of Copenhagen's Kastellet overlooking the waterfront promenade that is home to the Little Mermaid, The Langelinie Pavilion stands with a resilient spirit. The first Pavilion was built in 1885. Echoing its own ability to endure is the Pavilion chair by Andersen & Voll. Here the challenge was to design a stackable chair used for mass seating in this iconic, multi-purpose venue, the Langelinie Pavilion. The Pavilion chair has an airy feeling, with slim arms and legs that give it a light appearance.

The 1956 Drawn chair by Hvidt & Mølgaard stands out as a definitive piece of Danish design. Relying upon traditional craftsmanship techniques and built out of organic materials, it brings a sense of wholesome honesty to any space. Available in oiled oak, oiled walnut, soaped oak, and the newest addition of black lacquered oak. It comes in two versions: a wider model with arm rests, or one without. Additionally, a cushion in either Prescott black or cognac coloured leather is offered for a softer seating experience.

“The Gaulino Chair is one of my best designs, for sure. It occurred to us that we could do a personalised limited edition, and we decided to do 20 pieces where I would personally paint the seats. It’s a chair with nearly no straight forms, it’s a very Gaudí chair in this aspect. The same as the Pedrera – it reminds me of a women’s hair, so this chair sometimes reminds me of a women. ]]> The “Invisible Personage” armchair now continues BD’s long tradition that began back in 1991 with the Leda table and chair, that of producing furniture painted by Salvador Dalí. When reviewing the Master’s work, we discovered furniture in his paintings which after receiving approval by the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation, we decided to produce with Oscar Tusquets’ assessment, life-member of the Foundation and personal friend of Dalí.

“Invisible Personage” is extracted from the “Singularities” painting, painted by Salvador Dali in 1935. During those years Dalí completed a series with absent figures, which he called invisible personages.

This product is a limited edition of 20 units.

]]> In 2009 we commemorated the 20th Anniversary of the death of Salvador Dalí and BD wished to add its special homage by producing a special limited edition of his fantastic furniture collection. All the finishing’s are based on black, with aged black patina on the casted brass, Black Marquina marble for the famous egg, darkened gold leaf and dyed lime wood satin in black for the upholstery and lingerie chiffon, also black for the lamp shades. Refined materials and handcrafted manufacturing to bring up to date a furniture collection that BD has sold exclusively all over the world since the 90s, guaranteed by The Gala-Salvador Dali Foundation responsible for the painter’s rights. The black label collection came to market in a limited edition of 105 pieces (the age of Dali in 2009).

When we chose projects for furniture from the ideas with which Dali had filled his note pad for his work with Jean-Michel Frank, we had to imagine the colours which Salvador would have chosen to make his single-colour drawings, and we did soremembering the preferences and obsessions of the maestro (gold, Carmin Schiaparelli. The furniture was really very much in Dali style, but difficult to combine in not absolutely surrealistic interiors. When we made a Leda chair with aged black patina for a special set-up and observed the enthusiastic reaction of the professionals, we were convinced that these crazy objects would look much less controversial in a decor if they were dyed black. From my extensive work with the Maestro I feel that this collection would meet his approval and I am absolutely sure that Gala would prefer it to the multicolour. Oscar Tusquets

All pieces of ironwork in this collection are made of brass. The Black Label Leda Collection has an artisanal application of a special patina (metal dissolved in nitric acid) which is applied to a lightly heated surface accomplished with a gas blow torch. The reaction caused results in an irregular dark finish.

Taken from “Femme à tête de roses” (1935)” 1935 (Woman with a head of roses). It was sufficient for this sculpture to be made as a three dimensional piece, remaining faithful to every detail in Dalí’s painting. Dalí affirmed: “A chair can be used even to sit on, but only on one condition: That we sit uncomfortably.” We can sit on the Leda, but due to the fact that it only has three legs and that the chair is heavy, it being made of solid brass, is more a work of art than a functional piece of furniture.

That is why the BD catalogue of contemporary creations has always included those by admired classical masters. Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) is, without doubt, the most internationally well-known Spanish architect. But is not only his buildings and brilliant architectural solutions that have travelled the globe. His integrated conception of architecture led him to pay attention, not only to structural calculations, but also to all the decorative elements, including furniture, that would form part of the building. The admiration felt by modern designers for the furniture designed by Gaudí has not gone unnoticed by BD which was the first company to rescue them from history by embarking on their serial production using traditional art and Craft techniques and the same materials –varnished solid oak– in order to reproduce all the rich detail displayed by the originals when they were first produced.
